We're here to help
WritersLock turns the apps that steal your focus into fuel for a daily writing habit: the apps you pick stay locked until you've written today's journal entry. The loop is simple —Lock → Write → Unlock. If something isn't working the way you expect, the answers below cover the most common questions. Still stuck? Email us — a real person reads every message.
01 Getting started
After onboarding, open the Locks tab and tap+ add apps to block. Choose the apps you tend to lose time to — social feeds, games, a browser. From then on, opening one of those apps before you've written shows a lock screen instead. Tap Write now, put down today's entry, and your apps unlock for the rest of the day. Miss a day and the lock returns — that's the habit doing its job.
02 Granting permissions
For WritersLock to lock apps on your behalf, it needs one system-level permission:
- iPhone & iPad — WritersLock asks forScreen Time access (Apple's Family Controls). TapAllow when prompted during onboarding. The operating system draws and enforces the lock screen itself; your app selections stay private to your device.
- Android — WritersLock needsusage access (to detect the foreground app) and permission to draw over other apps. The Locks tab shows a banner with buttons that take you straight to the right system settings.
If the lock screen never appears, re-check these permissions — a system update or a "clear data" can reset them.
03 The lock isn't appearing
A few things to check:
- You've picked at least one app to block (the Locks card shows "Blocked apps (1)" or more).
- You haven't already written today — writing an entry unlocks everything until tomorrow.
- Vacation mode is off and you're past your earliest enabled writing time.
- The required permission above is still granted.
04 Writing times & vacation mode
You can set the times of day when locking is active, and turn onvacation mode for days off — locks pause until you switch it back on. Both live in the app's settings so your habit bends around real life instead of breaking.
05 Subscriptions & billing
WritersLock offers a subscription to unlock the full experience. Purchases, renewals, and cancellations are handled entirely by theApple App Store or Google Play — we never see or store your payment details.
- Manage or cancel (iOS): Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → WritersLock.
- Manage or cancel (Android): Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → WritersLock.
- Restore a purchase: use Restore purchaseson the paywall after signing in with the same store account you bought with.
- Refunds are issued by Apple or Google, not by us — request one through your store account's purchase history.
06 Your writing & privacy
The content of your entries stays on your device — we never upload, read, or store the words you write. For the full details of what we do and don't collect, see ourPrivacy Policy.
07 Deleting your data
Your entries live on your device, so you're always in control. You can edit or delete entries in the app, and removing the app removes your local data. To request deletion of the anonymous analytics described in our Privacy Policy, just email us.
