Words to Pages Calculator

Type a word count, set your formatting, and see the page count — with the assumption printed underneath so you can check it.

4pages

Based on Times New Roman, 12pt, double spaced, 1" margins, US Letter.

Adjust formatting

This free words to pages calculator turns a word count into a page count under the formatting you actually have to hand in. Most converters give you one number and no way to check it. This one lets you set the font, the size, the line spacing, the margins, and the paper — the five things that genuinely move the answer — and prints the assumption under the result so you can compare it against your assignment brief.

It is free, there is no signup, and there are no ads. If your professor specified Arial 11 with 1.5 spacing, set exactly that and get an answer that applies to your document instead of somebody else's.

How many pages is 1,000 words?

1,000 words is about 2 pages single spaced and 4 pages double spaced, in Times New Roman, 12pt, 1" margins, US Letter. At 1.5 spacing it lands around 3 pages.

That is the answer nearly every source agrees on, and it comes from a simple fact: a double-spaced page in that setup holds roughly 250 words, and a single-spaced one roughly 500. Change the font or the margins and the number moves — 1000 words set in Verdana is visibly longer than the same 1000 words in Times New Roman, because Verdana's letters are wider. Use the panel above to match your own document.

How many words are on a page?

About 500 words single spaced, 337 at 1.5 spacing, and 250 double spaced, in Times New Roman, 12pt, 1" margins, US Letter.

The ~250-words-per-double-spaced-page figure is the one that has been quoted for decades, and it is worth knowing because it makes rough conversions easy to do in your head: divide a word count by 250 and you have your double-spaced page count. It is an estimate, though, not a rule — it assumes a specific font, size, and margin, which is exactly why this page prints those assumptions instead of hiding them.

What changes the number of pages

Font and font size

Font family is the setting people forget. Two fonts at the same point size can differ by 20% or more in how many characters fit on a line, because average letter width varies: Verdana and Courier New are wide, Times New Roman and Calibri are narrow. Size matters just as much — the same 1,000 words double spaced runs about 3 pages at 10pt and about 5.5 pages at 14pt.

Line spacing

Doubling the line spacing roughly doubles the page count, because it halves the number of lines that fit vertically. 1.5 spacing is not exactly halfway between the two: line boxes have to fit whole, so a 1.5-spaced page holds about 337 words rather than a clean average of the single and double figures.

Margins and page size

Margins take a bite out of both dimensions, so going from 1" to 1.5" margins costs more than it looks — you lose an inch of width and an inch of height. A4 is narrower and taller than US Letter, which mostly cancels out, leaving A4 with slightly more usable area per page.

Why your document may run longer than the estimate

Any calculator like this one assumes continuous prose. Real documents are not: headings sit alone on a line, paragraphs end mid-line, dialogue leaves half-empty lines, and block quotes and lists eat vertical space. A heavily formatted document can run 10–15% longer than the estimate. If you are near a hard limit, check in the word processor itself.

Pages to words: working backwards from a page requirement

Assignments are often set in pages rather than words, which is the same question inverted: 5 double-spaced pages is roughly 1,250 words in Times New Roman, 12pt, 1" margins, US Letter, and 5 single-spaced pages is roughly 2,500. Use the Pages to words toggle above to convert any page requirement, halves included — a 2.5-page response paper is a real assignment.

How many words in a novel, novella, or chapter?

That is a different question — not arithmetic, but publishing convention, and the answer depends on format and genre rather than on your margins. Working out a manuscript rather than an essay? See the typical lengths in our guide to how many words in a novel, novella, and chapter, with sources.

Write more words, more often

The hard part of a word count is rarely the maths — it is producing the words. WritersLock locks your distracting apps until today's entry is written, so the writing happens before the scrolling does. Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 500 words?

500 words is about 1.0 pages single spaced and 2 pages double spaced, in Times New Roman, 12pt, 1" margins, US Letter.

How many pages is 250 words?

250 words is about 0.5 of a page single spaced and 1.0 page double spaced, in Times New Roman, 12pt, 1" margins, US Letter. A double-spaced page holds roughly 250 words, so 250 words is the classic "one page" answer.

How many pages is 1,500 words?

1,500 words is about 3 pages single spaced and 6 pages double spaced, in Times New Roman, 12pt, 1" margins, US Letter.

How many words is one page double spaced?

About 250 words, in Times New Roman, 12pt, 1" margins, US Letter. Single spaced the same page holds about 500 words, and at 1.5 spacing about 337.

Does font size change the page count?

Yes, and more than most people expect. The same 1,000 words double spaced in Times New Roman, 12pt, 1" margins, US Letter runs about 3 pages at 10pt and about 5.5 pages at 14pt. Font family matters too: a monospaced face like Courier New fits far fewer characters per line than Times New Roman at the same size.

Is 1000 words the same in Google Docs and Word?

The word count itself is the same — both count words the same way, give or take how they treat numbers and hyphenated terms. The page count is not, because the two apps have different defaults. Google Docs opens in Arial 11, Word in Calibri 11, so the same 1,000 words double spaced comes out around 3.5 pages in Docs and 3.5 pages in Word. Set the font in the panel above to match your document.

How many pages is 1,000 words handwritten?

Somewhere between about 3 and 6 pages on standard college-ruled paper, and that range is wide on purpose. Handwriting size, whether you write on every line, and paper ruling change the answer far more than any typed setting does, so treat a handwritten estimate as a rough guide rather than a number to hand in against.
